Gender based violence rife in Kwekwe

Gender based violence prevalent in Kwekwe district

Gender based violence cases are prevalent in Kwekwe district, coupled with highest Hiv prevalent rate in Midlands Province and coming second in the country. Kwekwe is the hotbed of Hiv in the province and has the most new infections. Every place where there is gold panning or where artisanal miners are concentrated, there is also high cases of Hiv recorded as this is the case with Kwekwe and Mberengwa. Midlands Province had 177 286 People Living With Vivas of January to March this year with just over 133 000 of them on ART.

According to Zimbabwe Association of Church Related Hospitals (ZACH)  under the Global Fund, Gender based violence is prevalent in Kwekwe district. 13 percent of women experience Gender Based Violence (GBV). A SASA model which is being launched in Kwekwe district in order to curb violence against women, spells out that that GBV and Hiv are interrelated issues. The model raises awareness about communities acceptance of men’s use of power over women, which fuels Hiv and Aids and violence against women.  A One Stop Center will be operational in Kwekwe district at Kwekwe General hospital to provide immediate to longer term health care, access to police and legal services and culturally and age appropriate counselling services. Survivors will be provided with dignity packs. SASA is an acronym of a four phase process, Start, Awareness, Support, Action.  Ten wards will benefit from SASA model in Kwekwe district. Third program is also in Umzingwane, Chimanimani, Bindura and Masvingo.
