Gokwe guns for town status

Gokwe Town Council authorities are in the process of upgrading and building infrastructure as they pursue the dream of achieving municipality status by 2025, a top official has said.

In an interview, Gokwe Town secretary,  Melania Mandeya said the local authority is growing fast and their aim is to upgrade the infrastructure so that it matches that of other cities

She said Gokwe is a vast area which requires its own service centre.

“We want to acquire municipality status by 2025 and at the rate at which we are developing, we can achieve this.            We are currently in the process of constructing and upgrading available infrastructure,” she said.

“We want to avoid a situation where we drive all the way to Kwekwe or Gweru for services. We want to be independent and be able to service our own people. So we can do this only by building infrastructure that is able to serve all the people,” Mandeya explained.

Mandeya said the town has an advantage of a government complex which houses the regional court.

“Already, we have a plus since we have a government complex that houses the regional court. Cases from bigger cities like Kwekwe are referred to Gokwe for hearing. So we have somewhere to start from,” she said.

Mandeya said that projects include, upgrading of roads, schools, recreational facilities and hospitality facilities among other projects.

“We intend to upgrade our roads. But our major drawback on roads is the type of soils that we have in the area. They are loose soils that are easily eroded leaving us in dire situations especially if it rains,” Ms Mandeya said.

She also said a Town House which was under construction was almost complete and will be commissioned soon, marking another plus in the quest.

Ms Mandeya said construction of a stadium and a hotel is also in the pipeline.

“We will build a stadium and a hotel to go along with the tourism attractions we have in the area. We have tourist attraction centers in the areas like Gandavaroyi and Mafungautsi Plateau, these are serious tourism centres that need to be marketed,” she said.

Ms Mandeya also said in the long run, an airport will also be constructed to go along with the tourism industry.

She also mentioned the need for the area to have tertiary institution facilities like technical colleges.

“We will consult with relevant authorities to have colleges built in the area. We cannot have our children go to other areas to acquire education. Gokwe has a large catchment area and should be a stand alone in terms of education,” she said
